More About Me

Work Experience

• I am a PhD Candidate focusing on machine learning at Caltech, with Professor Yisong Yue.

• I spent summer 2017 at Microsoft Research (NYC), with Alekh Agarwal and Miro Dudík.

• I interned at Disney Research (Pittsburgh) in summer 2016, resulting in a pending patent.

• I was a graduate researcher at the Synthetic Perceptive, Emotive and Cognitive Systems group (SPECS) at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain in 2013.

• I applied recent work to the domains of autonomous camera planning for broadcasting, modeling human decision making in team sports, maze navigation, Atari games.

• I am exploring ways to integrate more feedback and domain knowledge into the learning process (i.e. oppostite of tabula rasa learning).

Education

• I did my Master thesis in Cognitive Science at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona.

• I received a bachelor in Mathematics from Bucknell University in Pennsylvania.

• I grew up and finished highschool in Hanoi, Vietnam .

Computer Skills

• Watch my talk at ICML 2017 in Sydney, Australia on learning from demonstrations from multiple agents.

• Watch my talk at SSAC 2017 in Boston, MA on applying machine learning to model a soccer team from real-life professional data (what we called "ghosting").

• Watch my talk at ICML 2016 in New York, NY on learning to mimic human actions both accurately and smoothly.

Languages

• I use Python and occasionally Matlab for fast prototyping and testing.

• I've been a teaching assistant for CMS 159, the Advanced Machine Learning course at Caltech.

• I play soccer, run and row.

• I was an investment banking analyst at Merrill Lynch and private equity investor at Capital Z Partners in my previous life.
